The start of a new year brings tax season in the Netherlands. The fiscal year runs from January 1 to December 31, and from early February onwards, the Belastingdienst begins sending notifications for filing your Dutch income tax return.
Whether you’re a foreign employee, freelancer, director, or dealing with cross-border tax complexities, navigating Dutch income tax requirements can be challenging. Broadstreet specialises in expat tax returns and international tax matters, ensuring your return is filed correctly and on time.

Tax assessment after filing your Dutch income tax return
Tax assessment timeline
After submitting your Dutch income tax return, you will receive a preliminary assessment from the tax authorities. This assessment is based on your submitted return but has not yet been fully reviewed.
Expected timeline:
- Returns filed before April 1 → Preliminary assessment before July 1
- Returns filed after April 1 → Assessment within 10-12 weeks
- Returns with C or M forms → Processing may take up to 24 weeks
Once the Belastingdienst completes their review, a final assessment will be issued. Broadstreet monitors your case throughout this process and handles any correspondence with the tax authorities on your behalf.
